Is corporate Japan dehumanising Tokyo? Shop-houses, shotengai, restaurant lanes and alleys: understatement and anonymity, the fine line between commerce and residence in Japan’s urban landscape defines a city that is unique and fragile. Recent history has seen powerful corporations developing colossal projects, virtual cities which are as much an expression of corporate power as they are a response to economic need. Are these mega-projects, and their impact on the city compatible with civilian aspirations and the way Japanese urbanites live and function in their metropolis? ICCJ is proud to introduce two great speakers who will be giving their thoughts on Japanese urbanity by also exploring the secret of Italian design and its link to tradition and practicality.

Riccardo Tossani: Established in Tokyo in 1997, Riccardo Tossani Architecture is an award-winning design firm. Tossani is a graduate of Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, with over three decades of professional experience on a variety of projects in Japan and abroad. Together with Atsuko Itoda, the co-founding director, the RTA practice is known for its diversity, such as acclaimed resorts, luxury condominiums, flagship retail stores (including Giorgio Armani in Roppongi) and Michelin-star restaurants.

Iacopo Torrini: Born and raised in Italy, Torrini is the son of two architects. After obtaining his degree in Architecture from Turin’s Polytechnic, he moved to New York and later relocated to Japan in 1998. He worked for Iruka Sekkei and was involved in the renovation of temples and construction of schools and apartment buildings. He opened his own practice, Studio Dodici in 2003, dedicated to the new construction of residences, weekend houses and hotel renovation projects. In 2011 he obtained the First Grade Architects License in Japan.
