Mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro in Tokyo for strengthening the business with Japan

On April 19th, the Mayor of Venice Luigi Brugnaro met with important buyers of Made in ItaIy products at the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ICCJ).  Among them, representatives of Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd, the famous Japanese department store and Della Luna, Murano glass importer, attended this meeting.

Through this meeting, the Mayor’s aim was to strengthen business relations between Venice and Japan, especially in relation to food and Murano artistic products. Venice is very famous all over the world for its artistic glass: big containers and chandeliers but also collars and small decorative objects, which are traditional souvenirs appreciated by the 30 billion visitors that go to Venice every year

Mayor Brugnaro was accompanied by Mr Umberto Vattani, President of the Italian and Japan Foundation and was welcomed by the president of ICCJ, Mrs Kuniko Fujinami Weeks (also President of A.Testoni Japan Co., Ltd.) along with board member Mr. Marco Zoli (also President of Marposs Japan KK) and Davide Fantoni, the Secretary General of ICCJ.

Mayor Brugnaro stated that Venice is one of the 10 Italian “metropolitan towns” since 2014; this means that the Venice public administration manages not only the town but also a larger metropolitan area that counts 44 towns and 850,000 inhabitants. As a result, Venice is a strategic mediator between Italy and Japan for many business sectors: tourism, arts and crafts, food, industry, textile activity and trades by ship and air.

Mayor Brugnaro is keen to welcome in Venice B2B meetings between Japanese buyers and Italian producers very soon. He trusts in the strategic support of ICCJ and its network activity for pursuing this goal. It is also ICCJ’s mission to strengthen business between Italy and Japan.

In line with its mission, last year the ICCJ collaborated with ‘Veneto Promozione' (the society that promotes Veneto economic system) and hosted Italian food sellers in its exhibition area during ‘ACCI Gusto’ trade fair, which is one of the most important events about high-quality Italian food in Tokyo. ICCJ’s aim was not only to support Italian producers interested in finding Japanese business partners, but also to spread and deepen the knowledge of Italian food products in Japan through seminars and workshops.

Brugnaro concluded his speech reminding that Venice and its lagoon is in the list of UNESCO sites; thanks to the high affluence of tourists who visit the city every year, the town can be a ‘sounding board’ to promote the Olympics that will be held in Tokyo in 2020.
